Access to clinical samples through the Medicines Discovery Catapult
Access to clinical samples through the Medicines Discovery Catapult.
The UK has rich resources of clinical samples stored in numerous biobank facilities – yet many small companies struggle to access them. In the ‘State of the Discovery Nation 2018’ report, based on surveys and in-depth interviews with over 100 senior executives of UK drug discovery companies, 80% of SMEs said they had found access to clinical samples unexpectedly difficult.

The Medicines Discovery Catapult have recently launched a sample access programme, in collaboration with UK CRC Tissue Directory and Tissue Solutions, to enable small companies to access the clinical samples they need in order to further their development programmes. The Catapult can assist with the identification and procurement of samples for R&D projects, supporting sample owners with access arrangements, form collaborations across companies to acquire rare samples, and work on national policy questions around access to samples.

UK Biocentre will look to work with MDC on initiatives to simplify access arrangements for samples and promote long-term sample storage solutions.
